The value of absence
The value of absence
Last week, I reflected on the power of sacrifice and, specifically, the need to address ageing head-on. We seem to only truly understand the value of things like our health when we no longer have it.
How ironic that absence sharpens our appreciation and understanding in a way presence simply cannot.
My recent 100-day cough (yes, apparently, that’s the name of that beast) gripped my body tighter than a pair of skinny jeans after Christmas dinner. That ‘cold’ turned me into an achy, energy-sapped shell of my former self, and even climbing stairs felt like scaling Mount Everest in flip-flops. I really missed feeling OK. Yet this week, back to the gym, it’s slipped my mind how bad I felt.
So here's the thing. We don't always have to wait for loss to appreciate what we have. Just as we talked about choosing sacrifice over being sacrificed, we can choose to actively acknowledge and cherish the value of what surrounds us now, right at this very moment.
Think of a family member, a friend or a pet. We have the opportunity to go to them, touch them and tell them we love them. How often do we bypass this simple gesture in the search for the next Facebook like?
Loss is the greatest teacher. The silence left by a loved one's passing teaches us the volume of their presence. The void of an old friend's laughter makes us long for the times we took their jokes for granted.
So as you go about your week, I challenge you to identify one thing you've been taking for granted and take a moment to appreciate its value in your life. Maybe it's your health, perhaps a relationship, or even the simple joy and freedom of a quiet morning. Whatever it is, give it the recognition it deserves before it becomes a lesson learned, through absence.
Remember, it's not just about learning heaps and loving loads, but also about living with gratitude for what is right here, right now.
