And why overthinking hurts!
Why Skiing, Dancing and Entrepreneurship Should All Be Taught at School
Last week I talked about the Billy Connolly movie where he talks about living more and thinking less.
I can’t help but see the correlation as I tackle some icy, steep slopes here in Bulgaria and wonder at the tiny tots flying down the black runs waving to you as they go past!
Learning to dance at the age of 50 was a challenge, learning to ski two years ago was even more challenging.
You’re teaching your brain to do something it doesn’t want to do - falling down the mountain (this gives you control, leaning back to ‘safety’ is the killer).
Dancing teaches your brain how to listen to music, remember steps and respond to the touch of a partner, all at once.
And then there’s entrepreneurship, how to take resources and make them more valuable, or just setting up and running a successful business.
And here’s the corroboration: there are way more people in the world who don’t do these three things than there are those who do.
Why? Because none of them are easy, that’s why.
In all three cases, we’re doing something that feels unnatural, so we overthink it and it goes wrong: “Think less, live more.”
But here’s the thing about running a business, when we’re so close to something, we can’t see it clearly.
When we take time off to dance and to ski, and our minds clear, we get to see the bigger picture, and ideas and solutions emerge from the fog of confusion.
By taking the time off, we give ourselves a better chance of making the time on the job, more valuable.
It’s why leisure time as an entrepreneur should be part of the business model.
And it's why there have been some major insights for me this week as I try not to think about the steep slopes and icy patches.
I'll tell you about one of them next week that involves taking mental health to a global audience.
Now, can you imagine how amazing the next generation would be if these three skills were taught at school instead of algebra? I can't ever remember having to use algebra once, but, I had many a sleepless night at school thinking about it.
Why can't we teach subjects that are useful for life instead of ones that bear almost zero influence? One to think about. Or not...
In the meantime, have a great week, learn heaps, love loads, and pass it on...
