Or when ‘Shiny Object Syndrome’ goes well…
Procrastination: An Argument for the Defence
In conversations with clients this week, the subject of procrastination came up time and time again, and so I shared a story about a recent occasion when procrastination actually came to my rescue.
Yes, when procrastinating was actually necessary and valuable, and dare I say it, a good thing?
A seemingly run-of-the-mill case of “I’ll put that off until later” turned into an “I’m glad I didn’t do it, or I would have had to do it again…” scenario.
When we are putting something off, it seems like there are only two options; do it, or not do it. But there can be a third option: it may not be the thing you should be doing at all.
Only afterward (as the late Steve Jobs said once), can we join the dots looking back.
And then another thing happened in favor of procrastination only yesterday.
Whilst taking my morning browse of all things naughty (email, social media, news channels, etc), before getting stuck into a proper day’s graft, I came across an invitation by an animation company via LinkedIn to build us an ‘Explainer Video’ for our website.
I would have had to drop nearly £8k on the project but it would be a welcome addition to the business.
Great idea, I thought… and ‘shiny object syndrome procrastination’ kicked in. Although in this case, just under 2 hours and only $50 later, I’d written, scripted, and built an explainer video for the Success Formula Club home page. It’s here if you want to see it (also added in this page): www.successformula.club
I used Videoscribe to create it, before you ask. A doddle, and a lot less than £8k!
Two examples of when procrastination actually wasn’t so bad after all.
I believe that procrastination is a necessary part of the creative process. It’s there to make us reflect and take stock. It’s just got itself a bad rap.
So, instead of automatically labeling it as such, take a moment, sit back and chill and let the natural flow take the strain. It could just be procrastination coming to your rescue...
In the meantime, have a great week, learn heaps, love loads, and then pass it on.
