Is Growing Your Customer Base Really the Right Thing to Do?
I get asked this question often: "𝐻𝑜𝑤 𝑑𝑜 𝐼 𝑔𝑒𝑡 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑐𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠?"
But the quality of the question determines the outcome, and in this case, the question may reveal other significant issues. More customers equal more time, and if you are trading time for money, there’s a finite limit on this resource.
Instead, a better question might be: “𝐻𝑜𝑤 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝐼 𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑤 𝑚𝑦 𝑏𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑚𝑖𝑧𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑚𝑦 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒?” This opens up a different pathway, and it involves looking at your skill set and creating assets that work for you when you sleep.
Examples include a book, an online course or membership site, or a monetized social media channel.
Dr. Susie Spicer has been putting out TikTok’s recently, and her post this weekend suddenly got over 30k views, so we’re monetizing her channel. We’ve created an online course for her (launching soon), and we've written a book published this week!
Interestingly, her diary is now fuller than ever, but she’s also raised her prices significantly. So the off-shoot of her getting her knowledge out to a broader audience is higher paying clients and a waiting list.
You see, your mindset towards money will determine your relationship with it. Money is a resource that allows you to create more value.
We often tell our clients to get help (i.e., staff), and they recoil with fear at the idea of an expensive luxury called 'employees.' But employees are assets, not liabilities. They create more wealth for less than they cost. And for the most part, they get paid after they’ve done it too. What a fantastic resource!
So too, with your knowledge. How can you leverage your skills in a way that stops you from being face-to-face with clients, like Dr. Susie, while also helping those less able to afford direct access, by releasing accessible information?
