I was in the room
I Was There...
On Monday morning at 10.30am, I was unsure if I was in the right place. On Tuesday at 5pm, I sat in the very same seat, and I was happy to be able to say “I was there, I was in the room”.
Let me explain.
Monday and Tuesday was a two-day event put on by the Entrepreneurs Circle run by my old boss and business mentor Nigel Botterill. If you don’t know him, look up Botty’s Rules - great read.
He spent the two days describing his business journey from childhood to the present day.
Now, bearing in mind, I used to work for Nigel, I thought I’d heard all of these stories before. And I had, mostly. But the depth and clarity that Nige went into over those two days and the nuggets he shared, turned these two days into something rather special.
It became one of those “I was there moments”.
Nige has built multiple 6, 7, and now an 8-figure business on the back of sitting down and doing his ‘90 minutes’ every day. 90 minutes working on the business, not in the business. He talked at length about how we all get caught up in the day-to-day (ooooogah) minutia of ‘life’ (in-joke: you had to be there).
He also mentioned one of my favourite books of all time: Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art. He talked about procrastination and binary thinking, and it reminded me of my favourite passage in the book:
Are you a born writer? Were you put on earth to be a painter, a scientist, an apostle of peace? In the end, the question can only be answered by action. Do it or don't do it.
It may help to think of it this way. If you were meant to cure cancer or write a symphony or crack cold fusion and you don't do it, you not only hurt yourself, even destroy yourself. You hurt your children. You hurt me. You hurt the planet.
I remember when I worked for the EC as a business growth advisor and trainer in their Academy and used a version of this passage whenever someone presented me with fear as an excuse.
My motto became simple: “Just do it”. Although apparently, some clothing manufacturer beat me to that one.
Sitting alongside my post about ‘Death - a message of hope’ from last week, I think this serves as the perfect digestif to inspire you to get sh*t done.
Thanks for taking the time to really break down what it takes to be successful, Nige. Thanks for sharing your journey, warts and all. Thanks for being so open, candid and honest. And thanks especially for reminding me to just sit down and do the work. I was there. I was in that room… when that penny finally dropped.
In the meantime, have a wonderful week. Learn heaps, love loads, and then pass it on.
