Tales from a Marketing Matchmaker
Fancy a Date?
Over the festive period, one of my lovely clients described me as the Marketing Matchmaker as I connected him with a more than ideal prospect. It got me pondering (as I inhaled another mince pie) about the striking similarities between good marketing and successful dating.
Find your who:
Just like in the world of dating apps, identifying your ideal client in marketing requires more than a superficial swipe. It's about figuring out if they're the right fit for the long haul. Think about it – you wouldn't want to end up with a client who, much like a mismatched date, becomes a total nuisance over time (let alone leaving you with a bad online review!). Vetting your ideal client is very much a two-way process and one that requires a lot of thought. However, once you know who they are, it’s time to attract their attention...
Get noticed:
In the dating world, it's all about standing out. You need to be the peacock among pigeons. The same goes for marketing. Being different and getting noticed is key. Now counter-intuitively, this is easier to do than some might think because your competition likes to play it safe, and if you’re in a particularly ‘boring’ sector, it’s even easier to make an impact as no one else is doing it! But once you get their attention, ask them for a…
First date:
Would you turn up to your first liaison in your well-loved, albeit slightly tattered, joggers? Unlikely. Similarly, in marketing, how you present your brand is crucial. It's about putting on your metaphorical 'sexy little number'. Make sure your brand looks the part, polished and ready to impress (but without giving too much away!). Think little black dress rather than Victoria's Secret for date 1.
Woo them:
Just like you wouldn’t propose on the first date (I hope), don’t rush into selling in marketing. Wine and dine with your potential clients first. Build a rapport, show them you care. Get to know them, like them, and trust them and once this has been established, then it’s time to make a…
Commitment:
Both in love and marketing, it's about the long game. Communication here is key. Don't make assumptions about your client's needs, much like you wouldn't assume your date likes pineapple on pizza (a divisive topic, I know). Regular check-ins, much like date nights, keep the relationship fresh and misunderstandings at bay. Agree on what is expected and stick to it. Much like putting the bins out or the toilet seat down. Small things have big consequences.
So, there you have it — marketing is a lot like dating. It’s about finding the right match, making a good first impression, standing out, building a relationship, and committing to the journey. And sometimes, all you need is a little charm, a dash of confidence, and a good sense of humor. Happy marketing, or should I say happy dating!
