Do You Feel Lucky?
This week, I can officially declare that I’m a lucky man. I even have the data to prove it. But then again: “Diligence is the mother of good luck.”
Yes, I have the data that tells me lots and lots of information about lots of stuff. So, in short… I’ve discovered… data.
Yup. Gorgeous, juicy, and sexy… data!
I’ve collected a lot of data over the years, previously, trying to disprove confirmation bias (but the results were exactly what I expected). However, this data is different. This is telling me about everything that YOU are doing.
I even feel slightly empathetic with Mark Zuckerberg at this point [The misuse of users' Facebook data has caused Mark Zuckerberg significant emotional distress… However, he asks that you respect his privacy during this challenging time.]
Like Moses's parting of the waves, I am now seeing what is actually happening... Moses was a very modern Biblical character as he was the first to get a tablet and download data from the cloud. Honk.
Two free resources can do the same for you: Google Analytics and Hotjar. I cannot recommend them highly enough if you want to see what is happening in your business.
And the data tells us a lot!
Like when someone (I previously would not have known who this someone was, but now can see that it’s a therapist in the USA who came to us via a Facebook post about our impact survey) scrolled down our home page on a mobile device, reading the copy as she went, but could not find a call to action (which was stuck at the top and bottom) and had to excess scroll back up to find what she wanted.
Bug fixed. Multiple calls to action have now been applied to the mobile version.
OK, I admit it… we’ve had this all ‘installed’ on ours and our client's websites for a while now, but I was not interested in it until I asked the question about why more people were leaving than staying and our wonderful technical wizard Joan (Hi, Joan) said: "let’s find out."
We can see what’s happening in real-time. We have the answers. We always did. I wasn’t asking the right question.
So not only am I lucky to find out that I have the answers. I’m fortunate to have someone like Joan on my team who put the technology in place to find them.
