How your focus is being stolen and what to do about it…
Crocodiles, G-Strings and Cyber Attacks: let me explain…
Two very important events happened this week, both (seemingly) pulling in opposite directions.
The first was the EC’s Copywriting Masterclass on Tuesday in which Nige and his team helped to break down the importance of copy in marketing and how to steal the focus and attention of your prospects to get them to do business with you.
The second was finishing ‘Stolen Focus’ by Johann Hari on Audible, which describes how technology has created a monster in how it devours our focus and takes it away from truly living, whilst getting us to spend more time and money online. A perfect example of this ‘monster’ is Google employees who warn their own children not to use their inventions.
Both are excellent pieces of work. Both important. And both open up discussions about our attention and how to capture it, and indeed, the ethical nature of doing so.
One of the headline grabbers that emerged from the Masterclass involved crocodiles and g-strings (the latter coming from a guitar teacher I should add), and how any email copy needs to be preceded by a subject line that gets you to open it first. If you’re reading this, it worked.
Our attention is being pulled in every way imaginable by those seeking to distract us.
As entrepreneurs, we’re trying to stand out in a noisy, chaotic world, whilst at the same time trying not to get distracted by the same means we’re utilizing for our businesses.
And here’s where the EC, Johann, and I all agree.
Unless we take the time out to think, and to be, we’re on a highway to hell.
In computing - there is a hacking tactic whereby numerous computers raid a website simultaneously until it can’t deal with the influx of requests and shuts the site down. This is called a denial service attack.
Our brains are subject to this amount of information overload every day, leading to stress, anxiety, and a multitude of mental health issues.
Add to this: poor diet, toxins, lack of sleep, exercise and play, and the ever-increasing speed of life (it’s ironic that I listened to the Stolen Focus audiobook at double speed!), and we’re the walking equivalent of a lunatic in the asylum.
But there is hope, as we struggle to balance our lives and all of the demands we're subject to.
Pre-commit to taking the time-outs. Pre-commit to making time with friends and family, tech-free. Pre-commit to walking the dog, playing golf, having a bath, meditating, journaling or reading that book, doing your 90 minutes without distraction, or whatever it is that grounds you.
Pre-commit to living, and just being you.
In the meantime, have a great week… learn heaps, love loads, and then pass it on.
