Unveiling the Universe's secrets bit by informational bit
Atoms, Suicide and Jazz...
Thermodynamics, the branch of science that's been attempting to make “hot” and “cold” more than just coffee preferences since the 19th century, was once about painting a picture of order and chaos within systems.
But now, scientists are donning a new pair of quantum spectacles - ones with in-formation-tinted lenses.
As mentioned in previous emails, scientists who have theorised events and systems only for them to be proven later by scientific enquiry is already a burgeoning list, but one hero who slipped through the cracks was Ludwig Boltzmann, an Austrian scientist from the late 19th century.
He made a bold bet on the existence of atoms and molecules by studying the boisterous behaviour of gases. Though his theories received a cold shoulder from the physics elites, driving him to depression and then ultimately suicide in 1906, Boltzy had the last laugh when, just a few years later, the existence of atoms was confirmed.
Talk about a posthumous mic drop!
Fast forward to the rock 'n' roll era of the 20th century, where IBM’s Claude Shannon took centre stage, and while diving into the realm of communications, Shannon unearthed a show-stopping connection between thermodynamics and information.
He introduced a simple yet profound equation, S = k logW, where S = Entropy, ‘k’ is a tip of the hat to our man Boltzy, and logW is the mathematical notation of a system's energy arrangement… basically, this equation is informational jazz!
It might look like a bunch of letters to you, but it holds a seat at the cool table right next to Einstein's E=mc^2.
Basically, it’s a gateway into understanding that information isn’t just a wallflower but a party starter in how energy and matter groove together, even affecting the rhythm of time’s flow.
This fresh take on viewing the universe as an information-rich dance floor with deep tunes that serenade us with the notion that information, akin to energy and matter, is busting a move right at the core of our cosmos.
With each shimmy and shake, we're inching closer to not just the 'what' and 'how', but the soul-stirring 'why' of our universe and our boogie in it. We're beginning to understand how the universe actually works, not from an airy-fairy woo-woo whodunnit, but from a scientifically proven, "Oh sh*t, that's friggin' awesome, let's have a go..." kinda way.
So, the next time someone says it’s all relative, you can tell them it’s also all about the information, baby!
